Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

The team at Yolanda C. Holmes, M.D. P.C., offers laser hair removal so you have a way to get smooth, hair-free skin without near-constant hair removal. With laser hair removal, you can dramatically reduce the amount of hair produced in a treated area with results that last long-term.

The Yolanda C. Holmes, M.D. P.C., staff offers laser hair removal for your:

  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Underarms
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Bikini area
  • Face

In other words, if there’s an area where you don’t want hair, this treatment could be right for you.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by directing laser energy into your hair follicle. As the laser energy reaches the hair follicle, it heats it. When the follicle absorbs the heat, it gets damaged. With brief exposure to the laser, the follicle heats to the point that it can’t grow hair.

The laser relies on contrast to pick out the hair follicle, which is usually darker than the surrounding skin. Don’t tan before your appointment so the laser can best discern the hair follicle from your skin.

Will I need multiple laser hair removal treatments?

For the best results, yes. Not all of your hair follicles are active at all times. The laser works best on follicles that are actively producing hair (in the anagen phase). Repeating laser hair removal treatments improves your chances of catching the majority of your hair follicles in the anagen phase so you can get the best results.

Your Yolanda C. Holmes, M.D. P.C., provider customizes a laser hair removal treatment program to you based on your skin, hair, and hair goals. Usually, they recommend at least three treatments spaced a month or two apart.

How long does laser hair removal last?

When the laser can target the hair follicle well enough to destroy it, the results are permanent. That kind of accurate targeting is difficult, though, because the hair follicle may not be fully active at the time of laser treatment.

Even when the laser can only damage the follicle, it gives you long-lasting, hair-free skin. And you can return to Yolanda C. Holmes, M.D. P.C., for touchup treatments as needed to maintain your results.
